About this program

Full overview

Fantasy is the genre most vulnerable to self-indulgence. A magic system can expand until it swallows every problem. A map can become more detailed than the story needs. This course keeps the focus on what fantasy is actually doing narratively rather than decoratively.

You will examine how the best fantasy writing uses its invented elements to externalize internal conflict, and how the oldest conventions of the genre, the quest, the chosen one, the dark lord, can be used deliberately or subverted carefully. The goal is understanding the genre well enough to make real choices inside it.

  • Sanderson's laws versus softer magic systems
  • The hero pattern and its structural uses
  • Secondary world versus portal fantasy
  • Myth and folklore as raw material

Fiction isn't just stories — it's a structured way of thinking about character, tension, and world-building. Getting started with a trial means zero pressure to decide right away.
